In this thread, I propose we list the podcasts we subscribe to, along with a brief description/review as a resource for people who like podcasts or are looking for new podcasts.
I subscribe to the following:
A Prarie Home Companion - Garrison Keillor, Sometimes mildly funny, but not often. I'd probably unsubscribe, but it's really short (15 minutes), so it's not too much of a burden to listen to.
Battleship Pretension - A podcast about movies. Usually pretty funny and interesting if you like movies, with good guests occasionally.
The Bugle - British news comedy (not comedy about british news, but british comedy about News). Involves John Oliver of the Daily Show. One of my favorites, but Colleen hates it, so I guess it depends on your tolerance for news and britishness.
Comedy Death Ray Radio - Hour long show where they have guests, play "would you rather?" and listen to often-atrocious comedy songs. I had no idea there were so many comedy songs in the world. Other than the songs, this one is pretty great.
Coverville - A podcast devoted to cover songs. It's pretty hit or miss, as cover songs often are.
Coyle and Sharpe: The Impostors - Some comedy thing from the 60s where dudes ask unsuspecting people ridiculous questions. Pretty OK. Really short (5-10 minutes)
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History - Really really good if you are into history. However, it updates, like, tri-monthly or something. So, once you're done with the archive, you might as well give up.
Downloadable Content - The Penny Arcade Podcast, where they record themselves writing comics. Pretty great if you like video games, but also hardly ever updates. They haven't done one in a really long time.
Escape Pod - Short Science Fiction stories (30-40 minutes). The stories are usually pretty good, if you're into that sort of thing. Weekly Updates.
Front Page - The front page of the New York Times in 5 minutes or so.
I Love Movies - Doug Benson's podcast of comedians talking about movies and playing little games involving movies. It's one of my favorites.
Indiefeed - A song of the day podcast. Pretty much all indie rock. If you're indie rock it's pretty great.
Jersey Beat Podcast -Do it yourself by yourself with yourself
KEXP song of the day - Another daily song podcast. A little more diverse than the other one, but still mostly indie rock. If anyone knows a good punk song of the day podcast, that would rule.
Librivox Audiobooks - Audiobooks which have gone out of copyright protection, a chapter every few days. I've listened to Jane Eyre, The Colors of Space, The Rerturn of Sherlock Holmes and some of the Decameron so far. Pretty good stuff.
The Moth Podcast - People telling true short stories about their lives. Sometimes pretty great. Short (15 min.) Sometimes they also do stuff from this show on This American Life.
Never Not Funny - Jimmy Pardo talking with other comedians for 20 minutes or so. At least that's all you get for free. There's a pay version that's like an hour, but meh.
NPR: All songs Considered - A great music podcast that's really pretty eclectic. Every once in a while, you'd have to listent to jazz, though.
NPR: Live Concerts - Pretty much what is say it is. Whole concerts by various bands. The best ones I've heard are Radiohead and Liz Phair. Only recommended if you have just a ton of podcast listening time.
NPR: Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me - NPR's current events "game" show, where the trivia questions are really just pretexts for the guests to make one-liners. Sometimes funny, often irritating.
Podcastle - Short fantasy fiction. Not generally like swords and elves fantasy, but more like modern folk tales. Pretty OK, but I prefer its sister podcasts Escape Pod and Pseudopod
PRI: The Sound of Young America - Interview show. I find the host annoying, but he always has awesome guests.
Pseudopod - Short horror fiction. Pretty awesome.
Real Time with Bill Maher - The audio version of the HBO show
Reasonable Doubts - A show about religion and atheism. Usually pretty interesting.
Smodcast - Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier shooting the shit for an hour. Honestly, probably the best thing Kevin Smith has ever done.
This American Life - Best Podcast Ever. Every week they pick a theme and bring you a bunch of stories based on that theme, as you know.
Today in the Past - A daily Podcast where John Hodgman makes up some silly event that happened on this date. Not that good, but very short!
WFMU's The Best Show on WFMU - Fantastic, but also 3 hours long. There's a whole long thread about it on the board. Radio call in show, where one of the calls is fake and hilarious.
Best Show Gems - Biweekly podcast where they play a short part of an old Best Show, usually the Wurster call from a really old episode.
OK! Now do yours!
