Iowa is definitely Midwestern. I think the Big Ten school is usually a good litmus test. It almost always works, unless you're Penn State.

Does Southern Missouri count as Midwest? I've only lived in my current town for six months, but it's as south in Missouri as I have ever lived. Wild Bill Hickok shot a mofo in a duel a few blocks from where I live in the nation's first ever recorded shootout. Perhaps that makes my location Wild West. We also have these dudes, so regardless of our location, don't fuck with us.

Missouri probably shouldn't count as the Midwest, but I think it has to. It's not the South and it's not the Great Plains. I don't want to claim that nightmare of a state, but there's no other option.

Missouri is like Pennsylvania in that the state pretty clearly is divided into different sections of the country. Southern Missouri = South. Middle and northern Missouri = Midwest.

The difference being that there isn't a part of Missouri that is less than an hour from New York City. If any part of your state is that close to NYC, your state is absolutely not Midwestern.

The way I go about considering a state for admission is according to The 4 B's

Bands - nuff said
Beer - rate of consumption
Basements - I've been to shows all over the midwest, a solid house venue is a must. Many of the states listed in my original post sport multiple awesome houses.
Basketball - A team or multiple teams that regularly place in the top 25 (NCAA) every year.

Iowa fails in pretty much every one of these categories.

Didn't read through the thread, but Iowa is WAY more Midwest than Indiana. Geographically Indy is in there, but it's only Midwestern quality is that is borders decent states like Illinois and Michigan.
