I have a feeling both our picks are going to be out in the first round.

Haha, oh shit, I didn't account for that (very likely) possibility. How do you want to handle that if it happens?
I don't there's anyone else on the planet who would or could write a love song about ocelots except for Christy Brigitte Darlington.

Whoever went out with the higher score wins.  If they both lose and they both had the same score then we'll just call it a tie and no one wins.

Sounds good to me.

MHI SPRING 2010

First Round

17 Soapy Mofo vs 16 Greg

Soapy: Johnny Cash "Sixteen Tons": I'm sure I'll be torched for saying this, but this really doesn't do anything for me. I feel like I'm supposed to give this a great score because it's Johnny Cash...  This is a mumbly little song that could be just about any folk song that you learn to sing in 3rd grade music class. I'm just not into it. 5/10

Greg: Jawbreaker "Ashtray Monument": This is a fantastic song. If it was the album version, this would be an 8 or a 9 for me. Too bad it's that ridiculous live version with the fake cockney accent. Still good though. 7/10

Greg advances. Soapy bounces to the losers bracket.

In my bracket, Greg, Concept & Shotzi make me a bit nervous...

16 Tons is not one of my favorite Cash songs.  I think 5/10 is a perfectly reasonable score.

MHI SPRING 2010

First Round

21 Jettrocks vs. 12 Quint

Jettison: DeadMechanicals "Sidewalk": I like the chorus of this an awful lot. I kinda wish the verse part was a little more interesting - it feels like we're biding our time waiting for that catchy-ass chorus, but that's really a small complaint. A really good chorus can have a way of making any verse sound ordinary. The "round" part at the end is neat, too. 7/10

Quincy: The Copyrights "Switchblades ":  This is a solid if unremarkable number. The vocals sound kinda strange and modulated in spots. I hate to spark an ancient PPMB debate, but is that what autotune sounds like? This is decent. 5/10

Jettison pulls the 21-12 upset!

MHI SPRING 2010

First Round

13 Cakes vs. 20 Christian

Cakes: American Steel "Parting Glass": This guy has a great voice. GREAT. Sometimes it seems like he's trying too hard to be gruff. It sounds really forced in spots. However, they wrote some really good songs, and the strength and style of his voice overcomes the "trying too hard" aspects. His vocals are a net positive for the band. This song is a little jumbled in spots, but this is a good one. 7/10

Christian: Candy Hearts "Red Balloon": This is coy pop. That's the genre. Kinda cool, organic sounding. I'd be interested in hearing more of this band. Seems like they'd fit in with Lemuria but a little more straight forward pop. 6/10

Cakes escapes with a win. That was competitive!

I know, just saying, we both missed this one. I previewed her station and it played Beyonce and that Tiffany remake song that Mike hated so much.

Oh yeah, Jetts has the anti Mike Hall station, but she's capable of pulling off a string of great songs once in awhile.  I'm kind of scared that you did research before picking a dark horse.  I'm not sure I've ever even listened to Josh's station.  I'm the worst gambler ever.

Well, it was kind of a "Weddy by default" sorta deal. Hers played that crap I mentioned and Maverage's played TBR and fucking Poison, both well-renowned to be hated by one Michael Hall. And hey, I want that goddamned knick-knack!!

MHI SPRING 2010

First Round

19 Josh vs 14 PDR

Josh David Bowie "Suffragette City": BLamMO! 10/10

PDR Goldfinger "If Only": Really, PDR? I guess this isn't as awful as a lot of the other Goldfinger songs I've heard. But, you know. 4/10

Josh advances! He's an unknown quantity.

MHI SPRING 2010

First Round

11 Pshaw vs 22 Maverage

Mavg: Rancid "Timebomb": I never really listened much to Rancid. This is a good ska song, and sounds like the type of thing that could have been on the first Specials record. This is good. 7/10

Pshaw: Stiff Little Fingers "Suspect Device": Yes, this song is still great. 9/10

Pshaw wins a well-fought battle. Nice job, fellows.

MHI SPRING 2010

First Round

23 Weddy vs 10 KellyLynn

Weddy: Rivethead "In My Heart a Warehouse Burns for You": some solid pop punk with a lee-dee guitar part. This is a little Kennesaw Mountain Blandis, though. 5/10

KellyLynn: The Queers "Debra Jean": This song seems less annoying than most Queers songs I've heard. Kinda blandsboro, though. 5/10

This bout requires overtime.

Weddy: Project 27 "Dying": This here is a polished young love song. There is no danger. 3/10
KellyLynn:  Comet Gain "Draw a Smile Upon an Egg": Some sorta soft-rockey that could on a good day remind me a hair of one of the more mellow Church songs. No, scratch that. There's not much too this. This is tough. 4/10

KellyLynn survives a scare, but she will have to pull a much stronger song to get past Elliott.
