Cleptic's Drive Time Reviews
« on: August 09, 2010, 09:52:02 AM »
I downloaded the LastFM app for my Droid X last night, and now I can listen to LastFM stations anywhere I go, including my car.  I just plug my phone into the tape adapter and I'm good to go. I'm no longer forced to listen to crappy sports radio on the way to and from work.  So, until I'm bored with this little game, I'm going to listen to peoples stations during my commute and let them know how it makes me feel one I reach my destination.

First up is Mike Hall's station.  I've been on an 80s kick all weekend, so Mike Hall's station seemed like a good bet to scratch that 80s itch.  James Brown started off the trip with a B side that I've never heard before.  It wasn't actually Jame Brown singing.  It was some lady who sounded like Gladys Night.  The lady had a beautiful voice and I really enjoyed this song.  The Smiths were next, followed by Sick Sick Birds and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.  While only The Smiths were the 80s band so far, I still felt like I was listening to WHFS circa 1988.  Next up was Devo's We are Devo followed by some Rolling Stones song I'd never heard of.  I wasn't exactly hyper and pumped up when I got to work, but I did have a smile on my face.  Mike's station put me in a really good mood, and I'm now looking forward to a very pleasant day at work.

Mike's station is the first one I've listened to so far, so by default, it takes preset #1 on my LastFM car radio.  I have a feeling it'll stay there for awhile.

I have this for my iPhone, it's pretty nice, I think it would be even cooler if it had the scrobbler built into it too.
I don't there's anyone else on the planet who would or could write a love song about ocelots except for Christy Brigitte Darlington.

I work for Verizon so I'm obligated to say that the Droid X is fantastic.  I've only had my droid for a few days, but I love it so far.  This is my first touch screen phone, and I was surprised at how intuitive it is.  I thought I would have a hard time switching from a phone with a keybpad to touch, but I didn't.  My only complaint is that the battery dies quickly.  There are apps that help manage the battery, so I think this will be less of an issue once I find the right app.  The Droid X is also really big.  You should play with one in the store and make sure it fits your hand ok.  I've got some friends who have the iPhone and they all liked my droid.  I don't think any of them would run out and buy a droid, but they all thought it was just as nice as their iPhones.

yeah, i hear the droid x is totally sweet.  i've got the original moto droid, and it's also pretty cool.  i have never owned an iphone, and these android phones pretty much guarantee that i won't.  android kinda rules.

thanks dudes!  i looked up some comparisons online, and i believe the iphone wins out most of the time, but not by much.  i like verizon's service better than at&t so im gonna go to the store and play with a droid and see if i like it.  if i do i might just stick with verizon.

I put on Milo's station on the way home.  Pretty good station all around.  I couldn't name half the bands that came up but the one's I recognized included the Buzzcocks, For Science and the Exploding Hearts.  My son was with me for the last half of the trip and he seemed totally uninterested in what Milo's station was pumping out.  I skipped a couple screamo songs that popped up, but other then those, I enjoyed every song that came up.  I even ended up sitting in the car for about a minute after I got home just so I could finishing listening to some up beat rocker from some band I've never heard of before.

Milo's station takes preset #2 on the LastFM dial.  It was good, but not as good as Mike Hall's.

Also, I wonder how the time of day influences your take on each of our stations? I know I like to rock-the-eff-out on my way into work in the morning but prefer shit to be a bit mellower on the drive home.

I was thinking the same thing as I was typing up Milo's review.  I think I would have rather listened to his station this morning and Mike's this afternoon.

I gave Doc's station a spin this morning.  I felt like I was listening to college radio for most of the trip.  A couple indie tunes I didn't recognize, a deep track Radio Head tune and some R.E.M.  The Ergs came on half way through my trip and that helped perk me up.  I was having a hard time figuring out if I like Doc's or Milo's station more when the final two songs came up.  Green Day's F.O.D and Double Dagger's Neon Grey.  Holy shit!  Now those are two songs that'll get you pumped up.  I felt like I had taken a double shot espresso when I got out of my car.  I think I still enjoyed Mike's station more, but Doc's easily took the #2 spot on the LastFM radio dial after that fantastic ending.

last.fm loves the radiohead b-sides.  and it only picks the good ones.  weird!

Gurt's station is now my favorite one to listen to while driving.  I found myself singing along to at least 4 songs on the way home.  Classics from CCR, Nirvana and The Cure along with great modern tunes from The Roman Line and Rivethead.  Throw in some Toys that Kill and Norman Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky and you have a fantastic station to listen to why you're cruising.  Gurt's station just jumped to #1 on the LastFM radio dial.

Yeah! Though I don't recall listening to Roman Line or Rivethead, must've been while reviewing other people's stuff? Oh well, that other shit's all B0$$!

I'm thinking it was a different band then Rivethead.  I hate Rivethead and that song sounded a lot poppier than anything they would record.  I just took a quick glance at my phone and I thought it said Rivethead.

Must've been, I glanced through my "Listened To Artists" (cuz I'm anal like that) and The Roman Line is in there but Rivethead ain't.

Spirit In The Sky is a stone-cold jam though! And, I'm honored to be in the #1 slot right now!

Ha, I was glancing through your Listened To Artists too cuz I'm that anal.  Only band that was close to sounding like Rivethead was Riverdales and I know it wasn't a Riverdales song.  Let me check my recent plays and see if I can figure out who it was.

It was The Hold Steady's Our Whole Lives.  I KNEW that couldn't have been Rivethead I was listening too.  Talk about two totally different sounding bands.  I have no idea how I saw Rivethead when I glanced down at my phone.
