not pop punk but JAZZ!
« on: September 26, 2010, 03:42:51 PM »
and hip hop, what cool fucking jazz music can anybody reccomend, and i also need some hip hop with unbelievable beats.. at this time. My only exposure to jazz is Cowboy Bebop's soundtrack (the Seatbelts) and Sun Ra. Not too bad of a place to start, the best my mind can come up with now for good hip hop is Stones Throw (kindof general), so if anybody can/wants to share... please do so

get some stan kenton and maynard ferguson, Theolonious Monk,
I put my shoes through the washing machine regularly. They're fragrent. A sensual treat for the sidewalk's concrete, if slightly fictional, nose.

Depends on what kind of jazz you like. I think Coltrane's A Love Supreme is my favorite jazz album, but there are tons of great ones. I like a lot of guitar jazz, too, like Tal Farlow and Wes Montgomery, etc...

Coltrane is 60's bebop.

Start with Stan Getz, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, and if you're feeling kinky Charles Mingus.
That might explain why every time you talk about clothes, my vagina fills with sand.

bebop is kind of like jazz still, so i think it counts.

Coltrane is 60's bebop.

You're retarded.

Start with:

John Coltrane 'Lush Life', 'Blue Train', 'My Favorite Things', 'A Love Supreme'
Coltrane/Davis 'Live In Stockholm'
Miles Davis 'Kind Of Blue'
Sun Ra 'Super-Sonic Jazz'
Charles Mingus 'Black Saint And The Sinner Lady'

on a jazz note, why is jazz considered an american art form if it borrows musical ideas from all over the fucking world?

Seriously, Coltrane played some bebop but he was so much more than that. He was every bit as modal as Davis.

probably because it started IN AMERICA.

This is pretty interesting.  Like "thrash jazz" at moments:

I really like a lot of free jazz.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_jazz  <-- good place to start.

As far as more traditional jazz, Sonny Rollins - St. Thomas is a favorite:

Dan I knew I could count on you for some good music.

I checked out two Coltrane tunes and they were both good but i definitely prefer Blue Train (which i think i may have heard before) to Lush Life. Im still diggin' in and enjoying it very much. Thanks

Some great stuff already mentioned (Mingus, Miles, Monk. Sun Ra is one of my favorites.) Something I was gonna mention I haven't seen yet would be Naked City's s/t album.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_City_%28album%29
It is some earlier John Zorn stuff and gets very...interesting, for parts. May not be something you fully dig, but if you want adventurous, this is a great album. You should check out Zorn's other stuff (there's a TON of it and it's very diverse - so don't give up if you don't like one thing he does).

Davis's Kind of Blue is fucking epic.

I really like Dizzy Gillespie and Charles Mingus.  I don't have albums by either of them really, just a collection of songs, but DG's "Salt Peanuts" is one of my favorite tunes and CM's "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" is wonderful.
