Author Topic: I'm Thinking Of Making A Real Website For This (Read 840 times)

"Thinking of" in that I've already started and will probably have this up by tomorrow (hopefully, I'm going to be at Awesomefest all weekend). At first it will be just band pages with downloadable albums, but I plan to make it into a full wiki that you guys can vandalize, with tons of cool stuff. I thought about doing this back when Ramone To The Bone was just getting found out about, and now I'm doing it.

If any designers out there want to help on this, that would be great, because I'm more of a developer and less of a designer. I can work with psd and ai docs, and do all the css/html myself, but if you want to help any on that, it would be appreciated.

I'm developing it in CakePHP, so if anyone wants to help me develop it, that would be cool. I can be convinced to make an easy switch to Ruby, if that will make a difference. I just started, so whatever.

I've been poking around with this too. I'm just developing in PHP without any framework and all I have so far is a parser to pull Ger.'s post and parse the links, grab band and album and dump them into a SQL database.

My next step was going to be to try to grab the ZIPs and parse them for album names, artwork and whatnot to dump that into the database.

My idea was to do a website instead of this thread. People will be able to upload albums, and then moderators will verify that they have band's permission to post it, and then they'll be available to listen to or download from the site. Bands can also moderate their own pages, so they can upload things and have them immediately available.

This is super exciting. I was going to, maybe, get around to doing a straight blog style thing eventually, but who knows if I'd have done it. That you guys are taking the ball and running with it on this is awesome. Feel free (actually, make sure) to include my "how to submit" thing for people who are interested but may not frequent the board.

From the initial thread where I mentioned doing this Ger said he was going to keep running this thread and other people could do whatever they wanted with the data, so that's what I was working off of. I'm lazy and would rather not have anything to do with reviewing uploads, controlling moderation on band pages and dealing with that, but I do enjoy coding, so I'm in for that.

This is your shit Ger, so I'm happy with whatever way you'd want to run it. Do you want to continue being a gatekeeper of sorts and have things submitted to you, maintain this list and do things this way with an external website running with this as the data source or would you rather have a whole site taking submissions and be one of the moderators there?

Ideally, for the purposes of this, everything is uploaded in the same spot on my server, which makes it easy to keep track of everything. I have no issue with dealing with, and uploading the submissions onto the server.

Also I'm a fucking huge stickler for making sure everything is tagged correctly, has cover art (at least), and what have you. I find a weird joy in monotony.

Same here. I made a cover for the "Gorilla Marketing" demos the other day. (It's the color of a green banana, which I thought was so clever.)

Alright, I see. My idea was to do something along the lines of doing the site so that people could listen to the tracks without having to download anything, and also accompanying it with info about the band and albums and having links to buy their music and all sorts of junk. I can't really do that without copying the zips from your server over to mine and unzipping them so I can organize them in folders and let people access the individual mp3s and access their metadata.

If you'd like I could build the site on your server? I dunno?

No, I mean, that seems like a good idea and you should do that, it's just a separate thing from this, right? Like, I guess that's the whole point of this, the links are there, the music has been signed off on and is free, so you can take it and do whatever you like with it. Word. I was gonna, but somehow I dont have a folder with those songs anymore...and its just sorted in Itunes. Anyone who has it, feel free to upload it. Word.

I have the site mostly built and ready to go, but my webhosting company isn't letting me do some of the cool stuff that I want to do, so I'm in the process of buying new hosting. Once that's done, this thing will go live.
