i think jay pharoh will probably be cursed much the same way as ellen cleghorn and finesse mitchell before him, but i do love a lot of his impressions. really the only problem with them is he seldom looks like the character he's playing. but i love anytime he's will smith especially in the one where you see his commentary for the fresh prince box set. "see here carlton comes to confront me about finding weed in my room" "will i found this mari..." ::punch:: "welcome to earth!" "independence day didn't even come out yet, but i knew i wanted to try to make that a catch phrase"

He has also basically said in interviews that he isn't a comedian, but an impressionist and was essentially hired to do just that. To which I reply "Lorne Michaels knows what year it is, right?" You can totally see that they're struggling to keep him in sketches, and he's not really working out. He can only be Will Smith, Chris Rock, or Eddie Murphy so many times. None of those people are relevant, or newsmakers. Keenan has Tyler Perry on lock and Armisen has Obama. He's fucked.

So, an impression of an impression of a real person? Tracy Morgan is only relevant insomuch that he is a current celebrity. His whole "anti-gay" rant thing was months ago, is no longer newsworthy, and wouldn't play on SNL anyway. The impressions on the show have almost always been steeped in current newsworthiness. Who is black and making headlines these days?

It might be actually funny if they did a 2011 version of that and made it exactly the same expose-style thing, except this time nobody treated the white guy any differently than the black guy at all.

Even if Pharoah is just and impressionist he still has to have a some understanding of improvisational humor or at the very least acting with comedic timing. The writers could at least try giving him something that isn't Denzel Washington giving a serious look then laughing.
