isn't there some concern that prolonged ultrasound leads to complications?  is that only if you expose the fetus to ultrasound for a really long time at once (as opposed to shorter but more frequent bursts)?

i downloaded some hypnobirthing CD illegally, but we didn't end up using it.  it was pretty lame, honestly.  "your body is a perfectly crafted vessel for birthing.  your foremothers have been birthing for thousands of years.  you are strong and beautiful.  blah blah blah."

There is speculation that a lot of ultrasounding can cause damage as high frequency sound is projected at the baby.  But there is no evidence of such in the literature.  Plus, I ultrasound myself about 1-2 times per week for about 30 seconds each time.  I'm not really concerned about what that exposure is doing to the kid.
I'd give anything to see Grivet and Chris A hardcore fucking

I agree that it would be a bad move to have your heart set on it going a certain way. Who the eff knows what will happen? The classes my Dr told me to look into seem to be more 'Lamaze' or whatever, which I feel like I already understand from watching movies. They also include things like how not to kill your infant, diaper changing etc too though.

Chris Dickhead, a breastfed baby hardly cost a damn thing to raise. Seriously, I think people spend a shit ton on formula compared to any other baby raising essentials. I don't remember the hospital bill for delivery and a couple days stay being much either. A lot less than if you were there for any other kind of injury or illness I think. There's always home birthing options, too!

Unless you have to pay for daycare, in which case they are like taking on an extra mortgage payment.  We forget that a little too often, I think!

No water birth.  That shit grosses me out.  I had to do one once and I vowed I would never do one if I was pregnant.  Labor and push in the tub?  Yes.  Birth in the tub.  Hell no!

I might puss out and go to the hospital for an epidural.  I'm allowing for all options.  I feel like if I have an open mind about my birth I won't be disappointed if it goes a different way.  I'm allowing that I might be high risk and not be able to do it at home.  I'm allowing that my labor might not go well and I'll need a c section.  I'm allowing that I might hate natural labor and want to go to the hospital for an epidural.

Yeah, that's basically how I went about it.  I find that people who get all obsessive about their birth plan always end up disappointed.  I think as long as you go in educated (you've got that covered) and with an open mind, you're going to be okay.  My birth plan was basically, "I'm going to hold out for as long as possible before getting an epidural.  If that means I can hold out for the whole thing, go me.  If not, whatever."  When we were on our way to the hospital and things were SUCKING, I told Adam, "If they tell me I'm at like 6, I'll see if I can hold out a little longer, if they tell me I'm at like 3, fuck it, I'm getting the epidural."  I was at 3, hahah.  I'll try to hold out a little longer this time, but after birthing a baby with a head in the 90th percentile that didn't want to do that lovely coning thing to get out easier, I'm not going to be a hero.

I think you have to have a susceptibility to that shit.  It would just infuriate me, I'm sure.

Interesting! I don't know much about either so I'll have to get some books.
Are you guys doing the Bradley method thing or do you kind of just know what to do because of the midwife thing?

Nicole, for just the birth basics, I highly recommend a dvd called Laugh and Learn about Childbirth (or something really close to that).  It covers all the basics in a really easy to remember/understand way.  We didn't do any "coaching" type classes.

Around here they make you watch some goofy video before discharging you, it's chock-full of helpful tips like "don't try to microwave your baby" and "liquor + breastfeeding = bad"
I don't there's anyone else on the planet who would or could write a love song about ocelots except for Christy Brigitte Darlington.

The pregnancy classes we went to were basically three hours a week of them getting everyone to accept that it's not going to turn out how you planned.

Cool, I will check that out.
Yah, I would really like to do a class, even though I am kind of worried it will be super basic and pointless.

That's why we liked the dvd, and it really was super informative.  We'll totally watch it again as a refresher this time around.

1. How do you labor/push in the tub and not birth in the tub? Do you have to get up and move on the last push?

2. What the fuck is hypnobirthing? It sounds like being hypnotized while giving birth, which sounds kind of difficult.

Did you guys try it then? How was it?

there were parts that i was supposed to listen to with my wife and i always fell asleep and she'd get mad at me.
its pretty hippy dippy but good for getting yourself to relax. I think my wife said it helped during contractions. maybe she'll chime in and and say. I was out in the waiting room hanging out cigars (really i just have a terrible memory)

main thing is to try and not get stuck on Mag while pregnant. mag is the worst

what's the mag?

Kelly- I think it's just a hippy relaxation technique but I've heard it is helpful.

this is pretty much what happened to us - we held out as long as we could, then shit got real at home and i hopped in the car with a totally uncommunicative wife whose water broke as we got into the car.

the difference = when we got to the hospital, it turns out that my wife was at 10 cm so she started pushing right away.  we didn't even have time to fill out the paperwork.  i think i consented to an emergency c-section an hour or two after my son was born.  we were terrified that she'd still be at 3 cm though, at which point, we almost certainly would have gone with an epidural or spinal.

My only complaint about the whole epidural thing was that because of the catheter, I couldn't pee easily for like 2 weeks.

Why is that lame? Are we not mammals? Do you think we'd be an extinct species without birthing hospitals and all the medicine and machines developed over the past 100 years?
