2012 MLB Hot Stove thread
« on: January 05, 2012, 10:37:55 AM »
Is there already a thread for this? I didn't see one.

Anyway...Cubs trade Big Z to the Marlins for Chris Volstad. Even though they are having to eat the final year of his salary and Volstad is a pretty mediocre righty, I'm still happy to see Zambrano gone!

Andrew Bailey to the Red Sox!  I should probably learn about why this is a good move, right?  Have fun with Reddick, Oakland!  He was fun to watch in right field and he's already got a #ChroniclesOfReddick twitter hashtag in place, so there's that.  And I'm probably going to kind of root for the Phillies now because I really fucking love Papelbon but I think goes against me having adopted the Mets as the one NYC team I'll root for.

isn't that posada, now?  or is he gone?

http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/3341/jorge-posada

He's listed as DH for this upcoming season and I'm pretty sure he played DH last season, too.

he'll fit right in!  the sox are, on balance, old and injury prone.  did bailey have tommy john surgery in college or am i conflating some other NESN articles?

ED: yup, he did have TJ surgery in college

Honestly, the Red Sox fleeced the A's on this deal. Reddick isn't much better than Sweeney who you also got in the deal and the other two guys that went to Oakland are C prospects. You basically got one of the best closers in the game for next to nothing.

I don't know anything about the prospects other than what's mentioned briefly in this nesn article but the Sox farm system is (according to this book i read) one of the best in the league so it might be a nice long term investment for the As.

Signing Fielder as a full time DH is a terrible idea.  A-Rod is old and frail and Jeter is old and these guys are going to need to DH because they can't play every day.  Yanks also have Montero who is going to be a beast.

There is limited market for Fielder because who wants to pay top dollar for a DH these days?  Not many teams.  Even after Pujols signed no market has really emerged for Fielder.  He's a fat guy with questionable conditioning.  Even though he's the ONLY MLB player to play all 162 games last season how long do you expect that to last with a fat guy?

This may be the first year that I'm not embarrassed to be a Nats fan.  Lots of talk about Fielder coming to our team.  On one hand it'll make us a contender now but I'm worried it'll prevent us from signing Zimmerman to a long term deal.  We've got a ton of great prospects in the pipeline and Fielder would cause a big log jam.
