hey record nerds (a question)
« on: January 31, 2012, 04:13:09 PM »
So I got this 45 rpm record. On one of my turntables, it plays slightly too slow. On the other, slightly too fast. Is this a common problem or are both of mine off? I have no problems whatsoever with all my 33 rpm records.

Every record player I've ever owned plays things a liiiittle faster than it should.
I've been really into getting a pair of boat shoes.

I'm going to assume that you mean this happens on all your records that play at 45, not just one particular 45 rpm record?

It's your turntables, not the record. Most turntables are slightly fast, unless it's horribly noticable I wouldn't worry about it. Rega turntables are world renowned and are known to run slightly fast, it's part of what people like about them.

No, it's definitely the record. It likes one turntable too much & the other one not quite enough.

I have a sweet strobe effect on one of my turntables that helps you perfectly time the turning.  It rules.

Yes, with all my 45's. I noticed it a long time ago with Jets To Brazil's Four Cornered Night. I just thought it was weird I've never heard it (or it doesn't happen) with any 33's. My problem is that I'm listening to a test pressing I have to approve. I'm assuming it's fine, but that would suck if it wasn't.

And what Banana said was good.

this is the perfect time to announce our new 7 inch: "the four eyes - calibrate your turntable."
its 12 tracks of us counting seconds as various speeds so you can determine the true speed of your turn table

check out this series of films starring this one guy Cheech, and this other guy Chong.

When I was a kid I took that Brent's TV 7" to the local record store to have the guy record it to a CD for me. I think they charged like $5. Anyway he recorded it at 33rpm because he thought it sounded too fast and high-pitched.

Mine does too. except my turntable fucks up and will randomly slow down or speed up when it's on 45rpm.

Sounds like the record is off center. Meaning the spindle hole isn't perfectly in the middle, which leads to fluctuations in speed.

I'm sure it happens occasionally but a place mastering your record too slow or too fast seems pretty unlikely. But the only way to be totally certain is to buy the new Four Eyes record.

If it's a belt-drive, it may be as easy as replacing the belt.

it is a belt drive. i actually replaced it some years back. but what about the thing where it's only with my 45 rpm records? wouldn't that mean it has to do with the speed at just that setting or something?
