Letterman is so unfunny that that goes without saying. The only people who like him are old burnouts who remember when he was hip.

Letterman's monologue is painfully bad. His interviews used to be worth watching but now are going downhill. He uses the same schtick EVERY time where he just repeats what the guest said 2 minutes before in a different context. When he riffs behind the desk about nonsense between the opening and the guest he's good.

Craig riffs about nonsense non-stop and is usually pretty funny. It's just plain more enjoyable to watch, since it's so loose, compared to stiff show that came before it.

I don't know what it is, but I can't stand Ferguson or his show. It just grates on me in a a way unlike any talk show ever.

Dave gets a lifetime pass from me, but I never watch his show anymore. Every once in a while I put it on and it's like comfort food to me.

Here's how I'd rate the lifetime enjoyability of the late night talk show hosts that I've watched first to worst:

Letterman
Conan
Fallon
Kimmel

Leno/Ferguson - tie for last

Conan, Kimmel and Stewart all cite Letterman as their biggest talk show influence. I'd wager Fallon would probably say the same thing. Letterman is KING!!!!!!!!!!!

conan is definitely my favorite late night host. but if it's between letterman and ferguson i'd say letterman is the better host, but ferguson has the better sidekick when it comes down to paul schaffer vs. the george takei voiced robot.

the fact that Ferguson makes most of his shit up on the spot is pretty admirable, and Geoff Peterson is incredible.

And really the last 3 don't even rate, they're the worst ever.
I rarely watch Kimmel or Ferguson. Kimmel is largely unfunny but has a great bit every once in a while. I wish I watched Ferguson more because I enjoy his show everytime I do watch it.
Stewart and Colbert don't count - different types of shows.

i like his book quite a bit, too.

listen, i give Letterman quite a bit of credit. i just think Ferguson's style is so "fuck you" that i can't help but enjoy it and respect it much more than any other host.
