TTTALL help: record label and record shop people
« on: February 01, 2012, 05:54:39 PM »
Ok, so I'm talking with Adeline about how many copies should be pressed of this record, and it's becoming clear that they have very little experience with a compilation like this and don't know a lot of the bands on it, so basically they don't seem to have any idea of how many to press.

At present, the plans are for it to be vinyl only (no CD), with a download code, and it will also be available digitally.

So, given your experience and expertise, how many vinyl copies would you guess a record like this might sell?

I think a first press of 1,000 is a good place to start, gauge from there how it sells.

Yup, but do at least 5 different colors.  It'll sell like hotcakes.

1,000

Actually this probably won't be enough since there are so many bands on it and I'd imagine each band will be getting a certain amount of the pressing to sell themselves.

They're talking about 2,000, but remember, they've got a whole other audience outside our scene, you know, the people who buy Adeline stuff and anything remotely Green Day-related.

I'd be afraid if we only did 1,000, they might be sold out by the record release shows, without there being time to press new copies.

But hopefully people from labels will chime in.

Also, what about a limited edition of colored vinyl?  Anyone think that's important?

Lastly, who would be interested in a t-shirt of the cover artwork:

LE vinyl color is not important (is color ever important, unless you're doing a Valentine's or Halloween themed records, etc.)?

How many of those bands have tours planned for 2012?

I'd say 1,500 to 2,000 is a good amount.

This would be what my first guess would be but this comp is gonna be on Adeline and has been advertised on Green Days website, so you're gonna have those people that usually don't buy this kind of thing getting a copy.  Anyone's guess is gonna be kinda random.  Depends on if this is gonna be announced on some huge websites again when it comes out.

I'd buy a t-shirt if it didn't have the "Adeline Records presents: The Thing That Ate Larry Livermore" text.  Because I would feel funny walking around with your name on my shirt.

LE vinyl color is not important

You would not be a very good record salesman in this day and age, it's actually VERY important to this generation of record buyers. There's a reason that most labels do it.

1500, then repress as needed.  i dunno how the adeline stuff sells. but it seems a repress is cooler than a room full of stuff. believe me.

I'd say 1,500 to 2,000 is a good amount.

Wthout knowing what the GD factor will bring in I'd say this is a fair amount considering who's on it and the publicity it has/will get. I'd get 5 to start for my store and see how it went. Comps can be really weird. Very few sell more than a few copies but I feel like I could move some in here. I would definitly do something like 1000 on Orange and 1000 on White. That'll help it move for sure.

And do a "Larry's favorite color" limited edition.

I think 1000 does seem low with the aforementioned band copies, people who buy Green Day stuff, etc. But I guess you just get a repress done pretty fast.

I would love a T shirt.

Will Emily's Army fans buy vinyl in an attempt to own everything associated with the band?  If so, 1500 seems low.
