These situations sound super super different.

they are actually really similar (his was also all original songs by the way).  more importantly, name me the best selling vinyl comp. of the last 5 years?

peoples view of reality in this thread is so absurd.

Most people who will be stoked on this will be excited because it's Larry, who had something to do with a lot of awesome lookout comps back in the day that got them into bands. It is a bit of a nostalgia thing except with new bands. He's not trying to get it into hot topic or trying to bring back comps in general.

Well, this is a splash of cold water thrown on the situation!

But Mr. Brody is probably the most knowledgeable person here when it comes to the nuts and bolts of the record industry, so it would be dangerous to discount his opinions.

this thing haz the empire state building on the cover, and there are 20 million people in new york, so even if just a small small fraction buy it youll need at least 10,000.

like i said, the best way to go into something like this is to prepare for the best (i.e. press 2000, or even 3000 covers because it is REALLY cheap to press that many at once), but then plan for the worst (small pressings), because it is very fast and easy to make another 500 or even 1000 copies of a record once parts are lying around, but its impossible and embarssing to get rid of 500 or 1000 unsold copies.

i wasnt the one who mentioned hot topic, someone else did earlier in this thread as to why it would be a reason to make a large pressing.  i was responding to that.

Man Hot Topic doesn't sell LPs for shit. As soon as they get them in they go on sale because nobody buys them. Hot Topic shoppers are just as clueless now as always. I wouldn't even consider that as part of the equation.

i'm not actually sure how far off that is from green day sales affect.  here is why you will sell copies of this comp.:

#1: good collection of current bands.  you have this going for you, people will be excited by this, but you need to think realistically about the amount of people that will be excited by this.  it isnt insignificant, but its not going to be everyone that ever listened to green day either.

#2 by a larrrge way down from #1: any type of marketing adeline may be able to do, but again, comps are usually marketing tools themselves and thats how they are perceived by 90% of music fans, and thus are very hard to actually market themselves even when they are good.

I do think now a days this is going to be a hard sell.  As good as I think the lineup is I still think it really only appeals to a smallish subset of fans.  I thought the Insub Fest comps would do great but if we sold 250 of each it's a lot and have a lot of the same types of bands on it plus Ben Weasel one year, MTX another.  Granted we didn't have the Adeline factor so that will help but I would be conservative in the numbers you press.

Joe what comp are you talking about? I can actually not think of the last well put together comp with good bands and exclusive songs, which i think is a large reason people dont "buy comps anymore"... because they don't exist, or are just some bogus CDr with already released songs by everyones friends bands. I think a lot of bands on this comp should realistically have no problem selling 100 copies to their particular audience because they have an exclusive song on here. I think 1,000 will go quickly.

I've thought for a while a labels like Dirtnap, or Don Giovanni, or It's Alive should do a well put together comp with their bands full of exclusive songs. I personally am a fan of comps and wish more good ones were being done. As long as it's not throw away songs, but good material, it'll sell.

And by my count at least 6 or 7 of these bands tour a decent amount, and if they carry the comp they are bound to sell them.

Current fan base is 2k records at best over a year. But I think the idea of this is to sell/ market to a different / broader audience

I'd buy one and I'm looking forward to it. Offer the shirt up as a limited deal with preorders. Those of us that want it can grab it then.

Ken and Adam both mentioned something about doing comps for their labels in the original thread Larry made. With exclusive tracks. I'd be pretty stoked on that if it happened.

I'm a big fan of compilations, too.  As long as they're of the all-unreleased tracks variety.

Maybe that's just what we need to put this thing over the top: a cassette release!
