Is it ever too late to get into comic books?
« on: February 03, 2012, 02:44:43 AM »
years ago i was tempted to start when the "transformers: hearts of steel" series started, i don't know. i just never was into comics as a kid though. i love the characters and shit, i mean i love superhero movies and all a lot,  but don't know if i could ever get that involved i guess.

Nope. I started when I was 7, took some time off between 16-28, and have been reading again since then. Sometimes I read more then others. Right now I'm kind of in a slacker phase, a lot of stuff lost my interest.

A couple years back I tried getting into comics. Super hero comics didn't do much for me but I got really into the walking dead series. Only made it to the 3rd trade paper back though. I got over it when I started getting serious about vinyl.

I read a bunch from elementary through Highschool, but kind of slacked off afterwards.  I still pick up stuff occasionally, mostly tpb, but there's so much stuff out there I feel overwhelmed when I walk into a shop nowadays.
i got a meat slice yesterday. so fucking thick

It's never too late. I think the most important thing is finding a decent shop with helpful staff. Take some time to try out different recommendations for a while and get a feel for what you like. Don't just try Marvel/DC/Image, etc- there's a wealth of non-superhero/action stuff out there that's also great. If you are after superhero stuff the recent DC reboot makes an easy jumping on point. I really need to read some of that myself actually.

If you want any non-supers recommendations let me know and I can pm you a list of good stuff with descriptions.

If only there was some sort of really long thread where people talked about comic books.

If you're into superheroes, man there's so much exciting stuff still on the ground floor right now!  For starters, go check out Batman and Daredevil.

I just started reading them this year. I'm 31.  I never read them before because I never knew where to start. There was so much shit, that it was overwhelming.  DC's new 52 helped me because they were all new #1 issues. I knew exactly where to start, and there was no catching up.

No one should ever read comics.
Unfortunately, I'm not interested in having a good time.

I think this should be your catchphrase. Put this at the end of most posts and/or paragraphs.

Scene from Rex's 8th birthday:

"Ok, so I'm 8 years old!  Time to get rid of comics, toys, cartoons, my Fleagle Beagle teddy bear, and writing letters to Santa Clause because he obviously doesn't exist!  Hmmm, wrestling?  Wellll, maybe I could watch that for a feewww more years..."

Wrestling was historically watched by crowds full of grown adults, from 18 years old to 108 years old.  You don't see crowds full of 70 year old broads at the comic book shop.

i'm long out of the loop and stepped into a comic shop the other day. i was pretty confused and people could tell when i picked up batman incorporated and mumbled "what the fuck is this?" to myself. i  kinda want to get back into it especially since they started all the dc stuff over (i think?).

The most popular show in America is Two and a Half Men. Proof that most adults have the intelligence of a child, anyway.

Why watch a show about a washed up, alcoholic comedian letting his brother and nephew live with him when you can watch an intelligent and refined family program like "America's funniest home videos?"

comic books are sick.  i got weary of trying to keep up with them in serialized form though.  going to the comic shop every weak, running around town to find a comic that your shop ran out of, etc.  pain in the ass.  when i read 'em now i buy them in trade paperback form.  buy a whole storyline at once.  if you're a smarty pants like me you read the whole thing in a couple of days and get on with your life, instead of it taking 8 fuckin' months.

libraries sometimes have a bunch of trade paperbacks too, so you can read 'em free.  they've been thoroughly thumbed through though, if you're against that sort of thing.
