i find a pretty good indicator of how good or bad a band will be is how much gear they have to borrow to play the show.

the worst opening band i have ever seen has to be 'Mad Happy' --- HORRIBLE 2 piece- husband and wife (or boyfriend/girlfriend-whatever)- one played a keyboard and the other rapped- they were well into their late 20's if not early 30's. It was also in a really bad (bad as in dump, shithole, ghost town) town near Detroit called Flynt- Can't remember the band they were opening for though. All in All the night i saw that show, was probably one of the worse show nights/ cities i have ever been at.

The guy who opened for Jonathan Richman last week and probably inspired this topic was up there...

I'll let Pat Smith elaborate.

The band that opened for the Rezillos last year was bafflingly terrible and yet had a HUGE crowd there for them. They got a lot of praise in the wake of the Strokes-inspired wave of shit bands. The Star Spangles? It was like watching a bunch of Ken dolls play tedious music.

I have to agree with Dyna.  While some of the Star Spangles songs are starting to grow on me, they were pretty boring that night.   They looked hella scared.  The lead singer stared at his shoes the whole tome.  Then again,  I'd be scared too if I was opening for The Briefs and the Rezillos.

Even the Rezillos were a bit dissapointing that night, though maybe it was just me and was expecting so much more.

I'll let him elaborate.

My elaboration of the guy who opened for Jonathan Richman:  imagine a band with two guitarists and a guy who switches back and forth between a flute and a saxophone (they apologized that their bassist and drummer couldn't make it).  Keep in mind that the singer/guitarist has two or three guitars that he switches between.  Now add in lyrics that make Darlington look sophisticated and deep (except he didn't mean it as a joke).  Mix in a crowd that had been waiting for nearly two hours only to find that they still had to stand through an opening band that wanted to play a full set.  And you now have what that performance was like.

Although I'm not sure they were worse than the klezmer (sp) band who played before The Unlovables the only other time I was at North 6 (albeit in the basement).

I didn't think they were terrible, maybe a little slow.  The Fifes were certainly lively and entertaining.  Also, I was very bummed that William Mysterious was not playing bass.  That was lame.

Some indiecore/experimental band that opened for the Postal Service in DC.

...Although, I think that was not quite as bad as the hyperactive, stereotypical teenska band that opened for the Apers and the Ghoulies in Morgantown...my head STILL hurts.  And Jesus has yet to forgive me for witnessing the underage (and possibly retarded?) girls who got partially nude.

(And I thought the Rezillos were awesome with the Briefs...just a little old, is all.)

There are 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Misfits - Halloween - Philly - 1996

The opener was Prema, who kicked ass, but the band that played before the Misifts sucked royally.

The name?  Sardonica

when I saw this weird one night only Circle Jerks reunion show at the Birch Hill (why the one night only show was in jersey is beyond me but i'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth) for some reason the two opening acts were Autopilot Off and Mest who are both abismal. i didn't know who the openers were before then so i came all early and saw all these little kids with the same hot topic mest shirt as one another and i'm thinking to myself "how the fuck do these kids know who the circle jerks are?" and it turns out they didn't know. the place was packed but after mest was done there was maybe 50 people if that there for the jerks. and i at the age of either 19 or 20 i forget was then about the youngest there.

when i was at this great show called The Y-100 Feztival probably the only show with like a warped tour amount of bands with a $30 ticket that i felt was worth it (even though i was 15 so my dad bought my ticket which might have something to do with it) i had to sit through Marcy Playground to get to the bands i was actually there to see. Everclear, The Bosstones, Ben Folds Five and Greenday it was a great time to see the four afformentioned groups cuz they had all just dropped great albums. respectively So Much For the Afterglow, Let's Face It, Whatever and Ever Amen and Nimrod

this one solo acoustic guy that opened for Elvis Costello at Convention hall also sucked heavily. but the next time i saw E.C. on the other coast cuz i was visiting this ice bitch in washington that i regret wasting the money for my plane ticket on made up for it cuz Phantom Planet was the opener and that was cool

at the mountain goats show last weekend, there was an opener named COCO ROSIE.  worst band ever.  it was two girls who did yodely opera singing while they played with toys and didn't acknowledge that there was an audience at all.  one wore a hairnet for no apparent reason, other than the fact that she is soo soo cool.

it just seemed like an s n l skit gone wrong.  they also seemed to think they were really deep and made really condescending smiles to each other while singing.  did i mention there were toys???  and not in a cool way.  but in a i-can-tell-they-think-this-is-biting-social-commentary sort of way.

i couldn't stop laughing.

Yeah i thought it was cool that the specials played that show too, because guilty till proven innocent had just come out and was getting some mild airplay so they played on the little stage.
