We didn't trash hockey. I mean, I guess Owen doesn't like it but I do. I just don't like the NHL right now. Why, did it stop sucking since last season?

No, the officiating is still lousy, but I still enjoy the shit out of it. It's still faster and more exciting than pretty much every other sport out there. Even Bettman can't fuck that shit up.

In any case, I've just got a little sand in my vag because I live in a lousy hockey market, and every media outlet seems to go out of their way to actively denigrate the sport. It's fucking stupid. Here's an excerpt from a recent online chat with Michael Wilbon on washingtonpost.com that will give you an idea of how the media around here treats the sport:

Maryland: Mike, I know there's not much hockey talk in these chat houses, but what are your thoughts on the Caps changing coaches? In today's world of sports where "players win and coaches lose," obviously it had to be done ... but do in-season coaching changes stir up enough of a team's juices to really make a difference? Thanks.

Michael Wilbon: Do you actually pay attention to the NHL? Teams change coaches like they change underwear. They change them going into the playoffs after some other coach got the team into the playoffs. The Devils have done this and won the Stanley Cup ... or at least gotten to the Finals. Are you kidding? Does it help? Hockey players seem to react to a change in coaches like no other team sport athletes. I'm not about to speculate on the Capitals switch because I haven't seen the Capitals in person in over a year ... I simply don't follow the NHL the way I did as a kid, teenager, young adult or young sportswriter ... there aren't enough hours in the day, days in the week or weeks in the year to follow everything, even for guys like me who are paid to follow sports. The NHL is what I dropped, as I've increasingly gotten into soccer and (lately) NASCAR ... and it seems, from looking at attendance figures, I'm not the only one who has dropped out lately.

I assume that this may have seemed edgy and funny at one point, but when virtually every sportwriter in America is saying the same thing, it gets pretty tired. Instead of complaining about it you ought to wonder who is to blame for the sad fact that very few sportswriters even bother paying attention to the NHL anymore, much less covering it. Idiot owners have buried the league. Maybe it'll come back someday. But I'm not watching that crap until it's actually fun to watch again. Like Wilbon said, there aren't enough hours in the day. If I could get English or European soccer I'd choose that over the NHL. I'll watch NASCAR over the NHL. It's just not compelling. I'm sorry you're sick of hearing it, but people aren't saying it just to annoy you - we're saying it because the NHL has turned the game at the highest professional level into a bad joke.

You claim the officiating is bad - nonsense. The games are getting called exactly the way Bettman wants them called. The refs are simply doing their jobs as instructed. Bettman wanted more goals and the only way to ensure that was crank up the number of power plays. How do you do that? Make virtually all contact a penalty, that's how. Sure it's faster; when you don't have to worry about actually getting checked you can skate faster. Big deal, that doesn't make it entertaining. The game's been ruined. If guys like you stopped watching maybe they'd make it better. I'm part of the solution - people like you are part of the problem!

Has the game really changed that much? There's still plenty of contact, they are simply cracking down on contact away from the puck. I don't like watching endless special teams sessions, but that's not what's going on more often than not. It's very fashionable right now to bemoan the state of hockey compared to the good ol' days, but there is plenty of great hockey still being played in the NHL. Most people who jump to dismiss hockey haven't watched a hockey game in their lives, let alone recently.
