LUCAS RADIO SMELLS

1. The Copyrights - Thinking With the Lights On.  there was some talk in a Fest thread about not being into this on record.  i disagree!  that little guitar riff during the "lights out!" part is my favorite. it reminds me of Joey Santiago. 8/10

2. Angelo Badalamenti - Twin Peaks Theme.  whoa, Badalamenti has tracks on last.fm now!?  nice!  i generally enjoy his movie and TV show scores.  one of the special features on the Cabin Fever DVD is him talking about some of his music in the movie and how he wrote it.  he titled one piece "fingerbang misfire."  this sets up exactly the right mood for the show.  what a cool surprise.  8/10

3. Lifetime - Young, Loud, and Scotty.  saves the day definitely stole this exact intro for one of the songs on their first record.  i cant hear the Lifetime song now without thinking of that.  is this a demo version?  its definitely slightly different than the album.  weird.  its missing that great YEAH!  i dont necessarily love Lifetime like i used to.  they mostly get nostalgia points from me anymore.  this is one of the better ones, but the weird demo version is making it lose points.  6/10

4. Nancy - Stupid Little Phone Call.  i did not really "get" this record until i had it for months.  dunno why.  the guitar solo in this song is awesome.  i like the Nancy songs that don't have very many pinch harmonics.  the ending makes the whole song for me.  8/10

5. Hüsker Dü -  Never Talking to You Again.  i love the sound of this track.  everything sits just right.  and its got that eerie, sort of otherworldly, psychedelic feel.  without being actually psychedelic.  i cant argue with this at all.  10/10

bonus song because i'm feeling generous!

Milemarker - New Lexicon.  is this song where Paint it Black got the title for their new record?  damn.  i'm not so much a fan of later Milemarker.  i think they hit their peak on Frigid Forms Sell.  this is cool and dark and all, but it doesnt grab me like their older records do.  the picture of Manson staring at me on the record cover is freaking me out.  i wish i could understand the words.  4/10

maybe i wasnt feeling that generous after all?

Radio DOCAC

1. The Band - Long Black Veil - This song has a weird noise going on in it. It sounds like someone playing the tuba who does not know how to play the tuba. brrrwwwwwooooooowwwww. Eh. I don't really care for this. 4/10

2. Sundowner - Steal Your Words - Despite the fact that I like the Lawrence Arms, I haven't really heard much of this stuff. This is pretty OK. At some point in his career, this dude made the conscious decision that he was going to pronounce Rs weird. He didn't always do it, and I don't think he does it anymore. But there was a period around when this came out and when they re-recorded Turnstiles that he pronounces Rs weird. It's pretty offputting. 6/10

3. Full of Fancy - Mikey Says - I like this song, even though it makes me feel kinda weird. I don't think I've ever heard a song that makes direct reference to someone I know, and I don't really know how to react to it. Anyway, it's a good song. 7/10

4. Okkervil River - Song of Our So-Called Friend - This is nice. I find the horns pleasant and it's got a nice upbeat tempo that makes me bounce around in my seat. Good stuff. 7/10

5. Angel Hair - This Stool is Cool - This is further into the deep end of screamo than I am willing to go. The thing about being a band who screams is that you have to be good at screaming. If you are not good at screaming and you are in a band that screams, your band will be bad. Bad screaming is the worst. Way worse than bad singing. Good screaming is awesome, though. This guy is a bad screamer. The music is fine, but, yeah. 3/10

I'll do the trade I owe The Package in here!  I hope she finds it!

The Package Radio: My house is full of people I don't know, so I've retreated to my room edition

Go Sailor -  Every Day -- This singer sounds like she's kind of bored, but I guess it's working with this kind of music.  Oh, so this is twee pop?  It just sounds like music to me, but whatever.  I'm enjoying this a good bit, I guess I like twee.  7/10

All Girl Summer Fun Band - Grass Skirt -- I wonder how many of these songs are going to have girl singers?  Everything I've heard from this band has been very okay.  Summery and pretty fun, I guess, but nothing to go wild about.  I really don't like that chorus very much. 6/10

The Muffs - I Need You -- Oh wow, this rocks a lot harder than I was ready for.  Lots of yelling going on.  People keep coming in my room and talking to me so I can't really pay a great amount of attention right now.  This seems alright though, at the very least it's rocking my ass.  6/10

Hall and Oates - Maneater -- I don't even know how to rate this song.  When I don't give it a 10 Fatman is going to yell at me.  I think this is the first song not sung by a girl, which is kind of crazy. This song is very clearly from the 80's.  Do I really have to say much about it?  It's Maneater.  Hall/Oates

Jimmy Eat World - Sweetness -- Last.fm loves to pull Jimmy Eat World.  I'm glad it's not the Middle so I'm not required to give it a 0 even though I like it.  It has a lot of ugly chords in it but it's kind of a pretty song.  7/10

Cleptic was up late with his baby and wrote a review for me last night, so here goes one for him:

1.  Josh Ritter - Idaho  I heard of this dude a bunch in the pre-baseball days of last.fm, it was mixed reviews.  The last.fm writeup is so pretentious!  I can't see myself ever putting this on on purpose.  I like the voice and he makes a good attempt at carrying this with that but, no.  3/10

2. Bikini Girl - New Radio FUCK YES.  10/10

3. Muddy Waters - Mannish Boy    This is so fucking classic, if you know nothing about the blues and you want to sound bluesy you rip this song off.  Just like in Adventures in Babysitting.  10/10

4. Television - Little Johnny Jewel   So I'm sort of waiting for this and I'm not feeling particularly patient.  Ok here it is.  The intro is so bass and plinking, there are drums but also what sounds like some sort of electro tapping.  Fun guitar things going on, this song is fading out and now fading back in.  It is only half through.  I think we are onto the b-side now.  The guitar solo has picked up and is now by far the most interesting part of this track.  I believe the second half will be almost entirely all guitar solo.  I did not particularly care for it.  There is a little more vocal at the end and done.  The solo sounded like a soulless Santana, not angry enough to be angular. The vocals like poor man's lou reed.  5/10

5.  Teenage Bottlerocket - Fall for Me  I am currently getting burned by the Rocket!  Not my favorite track from Total.  I like it well enough.  5/10

6.  Public Enemy - Fight The Power  NINETEEN EIGHTY NINE!  This song makes me want to look up which was first, this or Express Yourself.  8/10

7. Violent Femmes - Promise  10/10 for a long time this was my favorite album, I think I would give every song from this a 10 except To The Kill.

8. James Brown - I'm a Greedy Man  Hey, this is James Brown!  Hey I think this one guitar part sounds just like that Cialis commercial.  This just got funky!  Back in the groove now.  This is a Cialis commercial, right?  6/10

9. Circle Jerks - Paid Vacation  pretty awesome!  Short sweet and to the point 7/10

10.  The Kinks - All Day and All of the Night - This is that later live version that has come up before.  The original is 10/10 this version is way too much like the Van Halen version.  6/10  No, it keeps going,  way this is actually sounding a little Cabo Wabo Van Hagar.  5/10
Todd, this is A-plus quality signature material here.  Just saying.
hahaha wow . tood, 12/10.

1. The Pietasters - Out All Night - Heh. This reminds me of college. I always kinda enjoyed some pietasters action. As far as Ska goes, they're pretty good. 6/10

2. Rancid - Roots Radicals - I have kind of a funny "meeting Rancid" story. A guy I know from Indiana drives tour buses and a couple years ago, he was driving Rancid and we met up when they came through DC and played at the Black Cat. I was hanging out on his bus, when Lars Fredriksen came in and jokingly demanded that we get off the bus. We did, cause I wanted to smoke, but then Lars Fredriksen came out and was very concerned that I might have thought he was serious. It was pretty sweet and funny. Anyway, 8/10

3. Rich Kids on LSD - Give it Up - This has got some kinda neat guitar stuff going on, but is generally awful. Lots of energy, though. 4/10

4. Smoking Popes - Gotta Know Right Now - I've never been a Smoking Popes fan. I think this is live. I'm kinda bored with it. 4/10

5. NOFX - She's Gone - Man, this shuffle is really taking me back. If I heard this today for the first time, I might hate it, but nostalgia is a powerful thing! 7/10

RADIO

Stiff Little Fingers - Suspect Device - This is live, but it still fucking rules. 10/10

The Clash - Spanish Bombs - This song is great! 9/10

Billy Idol - Eyes Without a Face - This song is pretty mellow. It kinda reminds me of the music that you'd hear at the movies before the previews start. Like when theres ads for local businesses. This is a cool little guitar riff. I'll give this one 7/10

The Lawrence Arms - Key to the City - Oh fuck yeah! Gimme Gimme Gimme Gimme Gimme Gimme Gimme Gimme Gimme !!!! 9/10

Full of Fancy - Mikey Says - Last.fm loves this song. Good thing it's awesome! 7/10

Holy fuck, Lucas!! Your station just rocked my face off!!

The first time I ever saw Jawbreaker, the Smoking Popes opened and they played for-ever. Then I had to leave halfway through Jawbreaker's set to catch the last train out of DC. I've never really forgiven them for that.

Also, I think their stuff drags quite a bit!
