Last.fm Punch Out!
« on: August 07, 2009, 03:27:19 PM »
Can't promise I'm going to get to this today, but I plan on running this within the next week or so...

Okay, so here's the basic rules.

I need a way to come up with a Top 10 stations. If I don't get any good suggestions or a list that seems reasonable, I might just use one of the MHI results, or fake baseball stats or something like that.

Anyway, once I've got a reasonable murderer's row of 10 fighters, I'll need a volunteer to play Little Mac and take on each guy.

The rules: (tell me if you see any problems with these)

Each fight is 3 rounds.

For the first 3 fighters:
10/10 in any round (for either fighter)= KO
Difference is 4 points or higher in any round (for Little Mac) = TKO
Two 8/10's or higher (for Little Mac, regardless of opponent's scores) = TKO
For decisions, see individual fighters below.

Next 4 fighters:
10/10 in any round (for either fighter)= KO
Difference is 6 points or higher in any round (for Little Mac) = TKO
Two 8/10's or higher (for Little Mac, regardless of opponent's scores) = TKO

For the 3 fighters before Tyson:
10/10 in any round (for Little Mac's opponent) = KO
10/10 and an 8/10+ (in any order, for Little Mac) = KO
Three 8/10's or better (for Little Mac, regardless of opponent's scores) = TKO

Individual Fighters, and how to win a decision against them:
Glass Joe (played by Read Hard) -  Need to get within 6 points of his total score
Von Kaiser (played by Marc)- Need to get within 4 points of total score
Piston Honda (played by Billy) - Need to get within 2 points of total score

Don Flamenco (played by Sopiane MF)- Need to beat his total score
King Hippo (played by Mugsy) - Need to beat his total score
Great Tiger (played by Chad) - Need to beat his total score
Bald Bull (played by Ben Weasel) - Need to beat his total score

Soda Popinski (played by Concept) - Need to beat his total score by 2 points
Mr. Sandman (played by Cleptic) - Need to beat his total score by 4 points
Super Macho Man (played by Matt) - Need to beat his total score by 6 points

Mike Tyson (played by Mike Hall)

8/10+ in any round (for Tyson) = KO
10/10 and a 9/10+ (in any order, for Little Mac) = KO

No TKO's.

To win a decision, you've got to beat his total score by 8 points.

---------------

Little Mac gets 3 "continues". Save points are earned after beating Piston Honda, Bald Bull, and Super Macho Man.

Oh man, this is going to rule so hard!  I would just choose 10 of your favorite stations.

Oh man, this is going to rule so hard!  I would just choose 10 of your favorite stations.

I don't listen to stations regularly enough to know whose my favorites are. I'm thinking right now that Mike Hall's gonna be Tyson, Matt will be Super Macho Man, you will be Mr. Sandman, and Concept will be Soda Popinski.

Your reputations precede you guys.

I need to look to consistently good stations for some of the lesser-tiered fighters.

Okay, so in true Punch Out tradition, I've gone with blanket stereotypes, and submitted the nearest ethnicity or nationality of the last.fm player to the nationality of his Punch Out equivalent.

Only one that doesn't have any real nationality in Punch Out is King Hippo--he's just fat, and I don't think Hippo Island is a real place.

So we need a volunteer to be King Hippo and we're in business!

We've got our King Hippo!

Now that the murderer's row is finalized, who wants to step up and take the role of Little Mac, and see how far they can get?

You're Don Flamenco!

(couldn't think of a Spaniard, so I figured a Portugese dude would be close enough)

Greg Merman is...

Little Mac.

His first opponent:

Read Hard is...

Glass Joe!

Round 1:

Glass Joe/Read Hard:

The Lillingtons – War of the Worlds
Great start to things. I love how this song chugs along at a pretty fast speed, but stays in the pocket and doesn't get out of hand. 7/10

Greg/Little Mac:

The Lillingtons – Robots in My Dreams
Weird. Two DBTV songs to start things off. This is a great song off of a great and underrated album. 8/10

Greg/Little Mac takes Round 1 by a 1 pt margin!
Another 8/10+, and he'll score a TKO

Round 2:

Read Hard/Glass Joe:

Bomb the Music Industry! – the Last Party (foul)
Off tune singing about beer. Eh. 5/10

Greg/Little Mac:

Fastway – Easy Livin'
This is some pretty good rock and roll. I like this, even if it is pretty standard and by the numbers. 7/10

Round 2 to Greg! He's got 3 total points on Glass Joe now. The only way he can lose is if Joe/RH pulls out a 10/10 next round and scores a KO punch.

Round 3:

Read Hard/Glass Joe:

Propagandhi – Ska Sucks
Fun tune Brings back memories of high school, and indignant ska kids misunderstanding the song. 7/10

Greg/Little Mac:

Teenage Bottlerocket – She's Not the One
I get it--like the opposite of the Ramones song. This is a pretty good whoa-oh pop punk song. They could stand to say "she's not the one" a little more though. 6/10

Round 3 to Joe/RH, but it's not enough! The only way he was going to win this was by KO, because--as the rules state--Glass Joe only gets the decision if his total score is 6+ points higher than Greg's.

Judges' scorecard:

Glass Joe - 19
Little Mac - 21

Little Mac wins!

Greg Merman is...

Little Mac.

His next opponent:

Marc is...

Von Kaiser!

Round 1:

Von Kaiser/Marc:

The Exploited – S.P.G.
I've never got into the Exploited. It's about what I expected to hear. Not bad. 6/10

Greg/Little Mac:

Chixdiggit! – I Remember You
I never got into this band. This sounds like some Fat Wreck-style punk rock. Kinda slickly produced. It's alright. 5/10

Von Kaiser takes round 1, but only by a single point. He's gotta beat Mac by 4 or more points overall, so he better step it up if he wants the decision

Round 2:

Von Kaiser/Marc:

Municipal Waste – Born to Party
I've always preferred deep growling voices over high pitched yelling when it comes to hardcore. Especially when it's a threatening hook like "municipal waste is gonna fuck you up". We don't believe you, you need more people. 3/10

Greg/Little Mac:

Zatopeks – Culture Of Control
Not one of my favorites off DFM, but a pretty good tune nonetheless. 6/10

Little Mac storms back in round 2, taking a 2 point advantage going into the 3rd round. The Kaiser has to win this next round by 6 or more points if he wants the decision.  It's Mac's fight to lose now!

Round 3:

Von Kaiser/Marc:

L7 – American Society
I like the riff and the detached Gen-X sounding vocals. Not the hook so much. 6/10

Greg/Little Mac:

Minutemen – Corona
Most know this song as the Jackass theme song. But before it became that, it was always a great country-twinged punk tune. 8/10

Greg keeps the momentum rolling from his Round 2 win, and takes Round 3 by 2 points, giving him the decision victory!!!

Judges' scorecard:

Von Kaiser - 15
Little Mac - 19

Little Mac wins!

Greg Merman is...

Little Mac (the Challenger)

His opponent:

Billy is...

Piston Honda! (the champ)

Round 1:

Piston Honda/Billy:

The Flying Burrito Brothers – My Uncle
Some twangy group singing. Not really my cup of tea, but it's inoffensive. 5/10

Greg/Little Mac:

Teenage Head – You're Tearin' Me Apart
This is the proper way to ape the Ramones.  And I believe this is the 2nd Canadian band you've pulled thus far. 8/10

Little Mac comes out swinging, taking it to the champ with a 3 point lead. If he can score another 8/10+ in either of the next two rounds, he'll score himself a TKO!

Round 2:

Piston Honda/Billy:

The Broadways – Everything I Ever Wanted To Know About Genocide I Learned In The Third Grade
Ha, I remember this song. I would've ranked this a lot higher 10 years ago, but not feeling it as much today. 5/10

Greg/Little Mac:

The Leftovers – Run Away
Love these dudes. One of my favorite young bands doing it today. 7/10

Mac comes within one point of TKO'ing the champ in Round 2, but Honda stays resilient.  Still, Mac is 5 points up on the scorecard, meaning Piston can only win this fight by a 10/10 KO or by taking the next round by 8 or more points!

Round 3:

Piston Honda/Billy:

Chinese Telephones – It's Starting Again
I really like these guys. Just straight-up rock with no pretense. 7/10

Greg/Little Mac:

The Dopamines – Structural Failure
Greg's station is rocking one after another. This is some good stuff. I think once I hear a few good punk tunes in a row, I start overrating songs, so lucky for you! 7/10

It was a back and forth battle in Round 3, giving neither fighter the edge. Fortunately for Mac, he had the champ on points coming into this round, so Mac is your new lower division champ!!

Judges' scorecard:

Piston Honda - 17
Little Mac - 22

Little Mac wins!

Little Mac has earned himself a save point starting at Don Flamenco, with all 3 continues still in tact!

Good work, Greg
